How is Attar Perfume made?

Explore the traditional Deg & Bhapka method for crafting Govedic Attars. Learn the authentic process of hydrodistillation, capturing the essence of flowers like saffron, rose, parijat and jasmine, or plant parts such as Vetiver Sandalwood and Assam Agarwood(Oud). This age-old technique, using equipment like degs, bhapkas, chongas, traditional bhattis, gachchis, and kuppis, has been a Indian tradition for centuries. Here is example of the step-by-step process of crafting Rose Attar through traditional hydro-distillation:

  • Experienced farmers pluck fresh damask rose flowers before sunrise.
  • Highest quality rose petals are separated from the inferior ones
  • Petals are placed in copper pots (degs) sealed with clay and cotton.
  • A bamboo pipe (chonga) connects the deg to a copper receiver (bhapka) and water tank.
  • The pot is heated, and after a few hours, the first distillate is collected.
  • This Liquid distillate is transferred, distilled again, and the true rose attar is extracted.
