What is Panchagavya?

In Sanskrit, ‘Panch’ means Five and ‘Gavya’ means Cow. As per Hindu rituals, a mixture of 5 products of the cow is Panchagavya or Panchagavyam - Milk, Cow urine, Cow dung, Curd and Ghee. Of these Curd and Ghee are derived products. These products are mixed in Ayurveda prescribed proportions. Panchagavya helps in overall wellbeing and good health. Various ancient texts and scripts like ‘Charak Samhita’, ‘Sushrut Samhita’, ‘Ras Tantra Sar’ and many more speak of the amazing benefits and importance of Panchagavya in human life. It is believed that Panchagavya is beneficial for physical and mental health. Do read more about Panchagavya here

Why should we use Panchagavya products?

There are 2 reasons behind using Panchagavya products:

  1. They are very beneficial for health and skin. If you look at the properties of ghee, it is very good for moisturizing. Hence people use ghee even as a simple moisturizer. Gomutra and Cow dung have anti-bacterial properties that help in keeping skin problems away. Cow dung extract and Ash are also very good for hair. Milk is full of vitamins and is a known ingredient in many skincare and hair care products.
If you look at homecare, Gomutra extract works really fine for floor cleaners and hand wash. This is again because of the antibacterial properties. Cowdung ash without any chemicals works really well for metal cleansing. Dhoop and Agarbatti which are made using chemicals are extremely harmful to the lungs. When made using Panchagavya and deodar sticks, these Agarbattis and dhoop are soothing and healthy.
All these Panchagavya benefits are present only in the products made using desi cow’s Panchagavya. You will not get the same benefit from the Panchagavya of a Jersey or an HF cow.
  2. A desi cow gives only 8 liters of milk per day on an average. This means that the farmer who is rearing this cow makes very less money (Jersey and HF cows give up to 30 litres milk daily) When you buy a Panchagavya product, you are in a way supporting the farmer. In earlier times, desi cow bi-products were used on a large scale thus enabling the farmer to sustain even despite the lesser quantity of milk a desi cow yields. Right from cooking to up-keeping the verandah, desi cow dung was always used by people. We at Bodhishop strongly urge people to buy desi cow products for as many home and personal needs as possible. Your one step towards using Panchagavya products can enable the farmers to sustain their desi cows.
